Message From MB10k Race Director, Rachel Judson

The MB10k was founded on promoting health and fitness in 1978. That passion has inspired our volunteer organized race for 43 years, and we love the stories that many of our over 1,400 'Run Your Own Race' participants shared with us this year. From little Belmont, Michigan to Bahrain, from toddlers to seniors, to first timers to 43 year finishers, thank you for sharing your stories. We learned our beach reaches far beyond the sand in 90266. Reminiscing about years prior, and hearing what a special place the MB10k holds in the hearts of many, makes all the hours we as volunteers put into the race worth every second. Know our plan is to be back as both a live and “virtual” event for the years to come. Be ready to lace up one way or another in 2021!

10 Days of 10k Is Here

The time has come for you to Run Your Own Race for the 43rd Annual Manhattan Beach 10k! You are in control and get to tailor it for yourself - your course, your way, your time. We are excited to see all the places you run or walk for this Special Edition. Give us a shout on social and let us know what your plans are, tag us with #runyourownrace, for any family teams be sure to use #familyteam.

MB10k | 3 Booster Clubs You Help Support

Your Dollars At Work

Since the beginning of its existence in 1978, the profits from the Manhattan Beach 10k have been and continue to be directly returned to the community in the form of:

  • Various health & fitness enhancements to the recreation facilities of local schools & parks.

  • Scholarships to Manhattan Beach high school seniors.

Of recent those donations surpass $560,000!

Some past projects the race has contributed to:

  • Mira Costa Track refurbishing

  • Yearly donations (in the thousands of dollars) to the Mira Costa High School Choir Boosters who provide us with traffic control & water station volunteers

  • Yearly donations to Mira Costa Drama Boosters, Sandpipers and Mira Costa Cheer who provide us with finish line support, t-shirt distribution & course entertainment, respectively

  • $11,000 exercise facility at the Manhattan Beach Middle School

  • The climbing wall at Manhattan Heights Park

  • The par course at the Strand and 26th. Greenbelt near Manhattan Beach Blvd. & at Polliwog Park

  • Strand mile markers

  • Play structure at Polliwog Park

  • Artificial turf at AYSO field on Marine

When you sign up for the race on RaceWire, you have the option of making a $5 donation to any/all of the following three booster clubs if you are so inclined.

Mira Costa Drama/Tech Boosters

“The Mira Costa Drama/Tech Boosters have been supporting the MB10k during the pre-dawn hours of route marking and t-shirt distribution for several years now. In addition to staffing our booths at the Hometown Fair, we have 15 parent volunteers helping out with the race and they always have a great time with the entire 10k staff and committee members!”

Kathie Papera
Mira Costa High School Drama/Tech Booster President

Virtual Shows

The Drama/Tech Boosters have two virtual show coming up and they’d appreciate your support:

  • The Brothers Grimm Spetaculathon: November 6th, 12th, and 14th

  • Spoon River: November 7th, 13th, and 14th

Tickets will go on sale mid October here: https://www.miracostadramaboosters.org/

Mira Costa Choir

For the past several years the Mira Costa Choir has sung the National Anthem prior to the start of each race. While we won’t get to hear them live this year, they have recorded a beautiful version that we can all still enjoy! Over the past three weeks, students each recorded their choir part for the National Anthem. They rehearsed it online (with students only hearing themselves over Zoom). Please click on the video above to give it a listen.

“Our choirs are much more exciting in person, but I'm proud to submit this {video} as a result of our first efforts teaching the students how to make decent recordings of themselves at home, that can be combined into a virtual choir. I hope the runners enjoy this unique version of the National Anthem. It's become a very special tradition for us.”

Mark McCormick

If you’d like to help the choir with their programs, you can make a donation to do so by clicking the button below.

Community + Fun = Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair

THE Weekend To Be In Our Hometown

October 5 is the weekend to make sure you get the full 90266 experience! Whether you're a native resident, South Bay local or in from out of town, the weekend has something for everyone. Be sure to stay for the full experience! Not only is it the 42nd running of the Manhattan Beach 10k, it's the 47th annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair!

Our Q & A With Bea Zimbalist, President of the MB Hometown Fair Board

How has the fair evolved since it began in 1972?

The beauty of the Hometown Fair is that it hasn’t evolved that much in terms of the feel of the Fair.  Arts and crafts, food and game booths have been there from the beginning.  There’s always been live music and the parade, albeit a smaller one.  Kid Country may have changed the most as we no longer have elephants! The Wine Garden is fairly new and I believe the big difference with the beer garden is that it’s fenced in now!   Mira Costa Booster Clubs along with countless local charities are still raising money at the Fair.  One thing that hasn’t changed is its mission to promote community spirit – whether that’s in the fundraising department or just plain fun department!

As a volunteer-run event, what is the secret to your success?

We have a strong board of 21 local volunteers who are committed to providing a fun-filled weekend for our community.   We divide and conquer so each area has a chair overseeing it.  We start meeting in March and finish up in November.  Some members have been on the board for over 20 years and some are just starting out.

Manhattan Beach has a big hometown crowd that reunites each year at the Hometown Fair.  Any advice for newcomers on what they should check out?

Definitely get a start on holiday shopping at the arts and crafts booths.  They have some really unique items and many of them with a real local flair.  Support your local schools, churches and other charities by playing a game or buying some food.   For many groups, this is their main fundraiser for the year so help them reach their goals.

What special or new things do have planned for this year?

We’ll have a new free game that is a photo scavenger hunt.  We’re hoping to capture the tween/teen audience with this but it’s open to all ages.  Everyone who participates will get a prize and the opportunity to win a bigger prize through a raffle drawing.  We’re also going to offer water filing stations in an effort to cut down on single use plastic bottles.  Manhattan Beach is on the forefront of environmental causes and we’re joining in.

Shopping, beer garden and bands are pretty obvious things to do.  What are some not-so-obvious things you offer?

The Free Games area is great for kids.  We get so many terrific prizes donated courtesy of local stores like Skechers, Rubio’s, CPK, Round Table and many more.  The Wine Garden is also a hidden gem that is definitely gaining popularity.  They have live music and plenty of seating.  They also have Stella Artois for those beer lovers.  And when you want to beat the heat and take in some great art and local performers, stop by the Joslyn Center who serves as our Community Showcase for the weekend.

What is the best resource (webpage, social media, print resources) for attendees to find the schedule for the Fair?

Our website is the best for all the details and our Instagram and Facebook also has information and fun photos.

Do any of your Board Members get to sneak away and run the race before the fair festivities take place?

Unfortunately they don’t as we have to be there at 7am to start set up.  We all feel like we’ve run a 10K by the time the weekend is over though!

MB10k Spotlight | Our Amazing Volunteers

2018 MB10k Committee Members.

Volunteers Make A World Of Difference

The Manhattan Beach 10k is choreographed by a dedicated group of volunteers! While they range from retirees to high school service groups, the common thread that ties them together is their commitment to help our community with their time, talents and treasures. We have chosen some faces that may or may not be familiar to you. If you happen to see them on October 5th, feel free to give them a high five and a thank you, we know they’ll appreciate it!

Meet The Volunteers

Although each person who volunteers deserves their own spotlight, today we are focusing on these fab 5!

Tim McGuire

Tim

The reason I volunteer for the MB Home Town 10k is I love all the friends and people involved! It’s such a great event that kicks off the Fair. I think most of all I get to tell Pete Champagne what to do when he’s walk/jogging. Merge to the right, the RIGHT Peter!!!

Volunteer Scott

Scott

I volunteer for the MB10k run because I love the excitement of a race. I enjoy seeing the range of ages and abilities, and I like to cheer on the runners.

Daryl Palmer

Daryl

I've run a lot of races and there was always plenty of support out on the course. Since my knee has seemed to 'retire' me from running, I'm happy to give back.

This race is in our home town and everyone is having a great time and super friendly.

It's tons of fun to be out there!

Steve & Tate

Steve

I volunteer for the race because Rachel Judson, one of the best people I know, asked me to help out. The Manhattan Beach 10k has a long history of being a community event. It’s also unique because it is part of the “Hometown Fair” which further enhances that local feeling.

Suzanne Meier

Suzanne

I love volunteering for the Manhattan Beach 10k. It's such a wonderful race - beautiful location, amazing crowd support, and so well organized. It's great seeing so many friends and neighbors participating, even though it's a large race, it feels very hometown! It makes me proud to live in the Beach Cities!

Manhattan Beach Chamber | The Best Of Manhattan

The Best of Manhattan Awards is returning on October 17th and it’s going to be bigger, better, and the BEST ever! It is the only event that allows the public to nominate and vote for their favorite person, business, and organization in Manhattan Beach. Please join us in celebrating the businesses and individuals that make Manhattan Beach the BEST community to live and work in.

Nominate your favorite people, business, and organizations for this year’s Best of Manhattan Awards. We’d love for you to nominate the Manhattan Beach 10k in the Healthy Living category by September 8 at 11:59 pm. Voting for the winners will run September 12-26, 2019.

THE MB10K IS A NON-PROFIT EVENT AND THE PROCEEDS ARE DONATED TO COMMUNITY FITNESS-RELATED CAUSES & SCHOLARSHIPS. THE RACE COMMITTEE ORGANIZERS AND RACE STAFF ARE VOLUNTEERS.

WE'LL SEE YOU AT THE STARTING LINE ON OCTOBER 5, 2019!

Sign up below and we'll send you valuable information about the Manhattan Beach 10k Run.
