Community + Fun = Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair

THE Weekend To Be In Our Hometown

October 5 is the weekend to make sure you get the full 90266 experience! Whether you're a native resident, South Bay local or in from out of town, the weekend has something for everyone. Be sure to stay for the full experience! Not only is it the 42nd running of the Manhattan Beach 10k, it's the 47th annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair!

Our Q & A With Bea Zimbalist, President of the MB Hometown Fair Board

How has the fair evolved since it began in 1972?

The beauty of the Hometown Fair is that it hasn’t evolved that much in terms of the feel of the Fair.  Arts and crafts, food and game booths have been there from the beginning.  There’s always been live music and the parade, albeit a smaller one.  Kid Country may have changed the most as we no longer have elephants! The Wine Garden is fairly new and I believe the big difference with the beer garden is that it’s fenced in now!   Mira Costa Booster Clubs along with countless local charities are still raising money at the Fair.  One thing that hasn’t changed is its mission to promote community spirit – whether that’s in the fundraising department or just plain fun department!

As a volunteer-run event, what is the secret to your success?

We have a strong board of 21 local volunteers who are committed to providing a fun-filled weekend for our community.   We divide and conquer so each area has a chair overseeing it.  We start meeting in March and finish up in November.  Some members have been on the board for over 20 years and some are just starting out.

Manhattan Beach has a big hometown crowd that reunites each year at the Hometown Fair.  Any advice for newcomers on what they should check out?

Definitely get a start on holiday shopping at the arts and crafts booths.  They have some really unique items and many of them with a real local flair.  Support your local schools, churches and other charities by playing a game or buying some food.   For many groups, this is their main fundraiser for the year so help them reach their goals.

What special or new things do have planned for this year?

We’ll have a new free game that is a photo scavenger hunt.  We’re hoping to capture the tween/teen audience with this but it’s open to all ages.  Everyone who participates will get a prize and the opportunity to win a bigger prize through a raffle drawing.  We’re also going to offer water filing stations in an effort to cut down on single use plastic bottles.  Manhattan Beach is on the forefront of environmental causes and we’re joining in.

Shopping, beer garden and bands are pretty obvious things to do.  What are some not-so-obvious things you offer?

The Free Games area is great for kids.  We get so many terrific prizes donated courtesy of local stores like Skechers, Rubio’s, CPK, Round Table and many more.  The Wine Garden is also a hidden gem that is definitely gaining popularity.  They have live music and plenty of seating.  They also have Stella Artois for those beer lovers.  And when you want to beat the heat and take in some great art and local performers, stop by the Joslyn Center who serves as our Community Showcase for the weekend.

What is the best resource (webpage, social media, print resources) for attendees to find the schedule for the Fair?

Our website is the best for all the details and our Instagram and Facebook also has information and fun photos.

Do any of your Board Members get to sneak away and run the race before the fair festivities take place?

Unfortunately they don’t as we have to be there at 7am to start set up.  We all feel like we’ve run a 10K by the time the weekend is over though!

MB10k Spotlight | Our Amazing Volunteers

2018 MB10k Committee Members.

Volunteers Make A World Of Difference

The Manhattan Beach 10k is choreographed by a dedicated group of volunteers! While they range from retirees to high school service groups, the common thread that ties them together is their commitment to help our community with their time, talents and treasures. We have chosen some faces that may or may not be familiar to you. If you happen to see them on October 5th, feel free to give them a high five and a thank you, we know they’ll appreciate it!

Meet The Volunteers

Although each person who volunteers deserves their own spotlight, today we are focusing on these fab 5!

Tim McGuire

Tim

The reason I volunteer for the MB Home Town 10k is I love all the friends and people involved! It’s such a great event that kicks off the Fair. I think most of all I get to tell Pete Champagne what to do when he’s walk/jogging. Merge to the right, the RIGHT Peter!!!

Volunteer Scott

Scott

I volunteer for the MB10k run because I love the excitement of a race. I enjoy seeing the range of ages and abilities, and I like to cheer on the runners.

Daryl Palmer

Daryl

I've run a lot of races and there was always plenty of support out on the course. Since my knee has seemed to 'retire' me from running, I'm happy to give back.

This race is in our home town and everyone is having a great time and super friendly.

It's tons of fun to be out there!

Steve & Tate

Steve

I volunteer for the race because Rachel Judson, one of the best people I know, asked me to help out. The Manhattan Beach 10k has a long history of being a community event. It’s also unique because it is part of the “Hometown Fair” which further enhances that local feeling.

Suzanne Meier

Suzanne

I love volunteering for the Manhattan Beach 10k. It's such a wonderful race - beautiful location, amazing crowd support, and so well organized. It's great seeing so many friends and neighbors participating, even though it's a large race, it feels very hometown! It makes me proud to live in the Beach Cities!

Need To Jumpstart Your MB10k Training?!

South Bay Runners Club members at 2018 Manhattan Beach 10k Awards podium.

We Have A Training Plan For You

We have lots of new participants each year who race the MB10k for the first time. For some, it’s their very first 10k! We thought it would be helpful to offer a training plan to help those who aren’t sure where to start! Whether you’re starting on the couch or you’re already on the road, we hope this is a useful tool for you.

This 7-week training plan was created by Michael Weisberg, certified running coach by the Road Runners Club of America and President of the South Bay Runners Club. Questions can be emailed to michael@southbayrunners.org.

Michael’s 6-week training program includes three days of running and one day of cross training. Running should be at an easy pace, meaning you should be able to have a conversation with someone without pausing to catch your breath.  Alternatively, you can run/walk, starting with 5 minutes of running followed by 5 minutes of walking then increasing to 7 minutes of running/3 minutes walking. Cross training includes swimming, biking, hiking, walking, rowing, elliptical - something that gets your heart rate elevated for a continuous duration.

If you live locally, try doing your Saturday runs on portions of the Manhattan Beach 10k course. We have brand new, clearly displayed mile markers to guide you on your way!

Course Mile Markers donated by the MB10k.

Fear of Rosecrans? For those who have done our course before, there is no need to fear the Rosecrans hill. All it takes is a little determination and preparation. A training run or walk that includes the Rosecrans hill is always rewarded with a coastal breeze and scenic view of the Pacific Ocean. Think of that as your virtual medal of achievement!

Running friends are the best friends!

Join A Run Club Or Group

If training on your own is not your thing, we are fortunate to have many local running clubs and running groups to choose from in the South Bay. Check out a previous blog of ours to read about Club Ed and South Bay Runners Club. Click here to read.

The Village Runner stores in Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach also meet at various times throughout the week to run, walk and be social. Read more here.

MB10k Spotlight | Coach Renee

Renee Williams-Smith in the 2018 Manhattan Beach 10k.

To Know Her Is To Love Her

Meet Coach Renee Williams-Smith who heads up the Girls Mira Costa Cross Country team. Read on about this inspiring woman who is an exemplary role model for those who run like a girl!

Our Q & A With Mama Reniz

How long have you been the Girls Distance Running Coach at Mira Costa?

I was an assistant coach for 2 years and have been the head coach for about 15 years.

In 2014 you were chosen as the Inspiring Coach of the Year by the Brooks Running Company. What did that award mean to you?

It was really special because girls from my team nominated me and sent 3 videos to Brooks all without my knowledge.  It was very thoughtful and heartfelt and the fact that they understood my commitment to their growth meant the world to me.

You are an amazing leader for girls and make quite an impression on your athletes, how do you go about choosing your team captains?

It’s an evolving process.  Some girls are natural leaders who are inclusive by nature and comfortably assume the role.  Sometimes it’s girls that I believe in that haven’t quite seen it themselves yet. In both cases it is very rewarding to watch them learn and grow as people, runners, and leaders.

When you attended Mira Costa there was not a girls distance running team. How did you persevere in the face of adversity?

I didn’t really see it as adversity, I was not going to get a lot of playing time as a soccer player and I wanted to do something so I started running and brought my friends out to run too since it was only boys at the time.

You are the Race Director for the upcoming Dick Fitzgerald 2 Mile Beach Run. Tell us about this race and how it benefits Mira Costa’s cross country program.

It’s a fun 2- mile sand run starting at Hermosa beach Pier. It’s a mile out on the soft sand and a mile back on the hard sand. It’s a real community event with families with kids, parents, even some grandparents. We’ve had quite a few of the same people run it for the past 20 years. It’ a short fun family and community event that is part of the International surf festival. It is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and is a great chance for us to actively engage the community.

What do you look forward to when you take your team to Mammoth for training?

Great team bonding and great training.  It’s an excellent opportunity to get all the kids together to train and start forming their team.  I’t an opportunity for the athletes to challenge themselves and get to know each other by sharing this experience.

What do you love most about the Manhattan Beach 10k?

That it is a huge community event.  I am in my happy place while running and I get to do it with so many friends and kids that I have coached over the years. Plus, it is so well organized.

When you aren’t running, how do you like to spend your time?

Talking about running 😊

I love to spend time with my family mostly laughing and watching my son play water polo and my husband ocean prone paddling.

Support Mira Costa Cross Country

The Dick Fitzgerald 2-Mile Beach Run will be held on Saturday August 3rd, 2019 at 8:00 a.m. This fun race is very challenging because of the soft sand on the first half of the race and the hard pack run on the return trip. The gentle sea breeze is a welcome relief to the runners . This is a great way to get some exercise and participate in one of the first events of the Surf Festival. 100% of proceeds benefit the Mira Costa Cross Country teams.

MB10k Sponsor Spotlight | Gold Arrow Camp

2018 Gold Arrow Campers/Racers at the Manhattan Beach 10k.

Meet One Of Our Super Sponsors

We are pleased to shine the spotlight on longtime Manhattan Beach 10k sponsor Gold Arrow Camp! You may have heard of them already, as they are a popular camp, but if not read on.

Our Q & A With Audrey "Sunshine" Monke of GAC

Please tell us about Gold Arrow Camp.

Gold Arrow Camp is a children's camp on Huntington Lake in California's Sierra National Forest. Since 1933, we've provided three generations of campers with a supportive community where their lives are enriched through the friendships they form and the experiences they have at camp. Campers and staff return to Gold Arrow Camp year after year because of the feeling of tradition, community, and belonging that they experience. For many campers, their time at camp is what they look forward to all year long. The fun and the friendships that are built at GAC provide life-long childhood memories for our campers.

In this age of constant screen time, how do you get campers to unplug and interact with each other?

Unplugging and connecting face-to-face is one of our core values. We're so fortunate that our campers and staff embrace the opportunity to unplug for the time they're at camp. Even our teenage campers recognize what a gift it is to be outdoors and away from technology for a few weeks each summer. Because everyone around them (including the staff) are not on their phones, the campers quickly get used to being unplugged...and they learn to love the focus on face-to-face interactions. Many campers report that their camp friends - who they only spend a few weeks with - are their closest friends. This is likely because they have so much concentrated, face-to-face time together with no distractions. Our nightly campfire chats are a highlight of camp for our campers.

What sets you apart from other camps?

We are a super rustic, outdoorsy camp and we focus on all non-competitive, recreational activities. Our philosophy is that kids need a break from academics and competitive sports and camp is the perfect place to have fun, make friends, and grow. We have an incredibly loyal community of families with many second and third generation campers as well as over 100 five-year campers each summer.

Tell us about the green blankets.

Our campers and staff who spend five summers at Gold Arrow get a special Five-Year Blanket, embroidered with their name. These are treasured in our community. The blankets are modeled after football blankets. Our camp's founder, Manny Vezie, played football under the famous coach Knute Rockne at Notre Dame University, so our camp blankets are the color and style of the football blanket Manny had during his Notre Dame days in the 1920s.

How long have you been a sponsor of the Manhattan Beach 10k?

We know we've been participating since at least 2009, but it could have been even earlier.

Is there anything you can reveal about what you are cooking up for your expo booth this year?

We are excited to be giving out reusable grocery bags!

What do you most love about the Manhattan Beach 10k?

It's a one-of-a-kind community event that really gets people out and celebrating your amazing city. We love seeing the crowds and the energy as we run through the neighborhoods and then by the pier. It's always fun for us to see current and past staff, campers, and families who stop by our booth to say "hi" and check in with their camp family. We also love to run and have an informal running team called the GAC Runners made up of our campers, parents, staff, and alumni. We love coming out to run together proudly sporting our green GAC Runners shirts while also supporting the amazing Manhattan Beach community.

The Manhattan Beach 10k loves family and so we’ve created our event for families to race together. It is a way to make positive, healthy choices, while sparking a little competition! We offer 7 different family team categories comprised of 2 runners each. We are highlighting a few of those teams who participated in 2018 and asked them some questions about their experiences with the race:

  1. What is your most memorable MB10k moment?

  2. Do you have any race day traditions?

  3. Do you run together?

  4. What is your race day strategy?

  5. What is your favorite “unofficial” finish line?

Abby’s Answers - She was also the 1st Place Female in 2018, btw!

1. My most memorable MB10k was in 2009. It was my second year running the race, and I was in the eighth grade. I dipped under the 50-minute mark for the first time and won my age division. The overwhelming support from the community all along the course and sense of accomplishment after beating my time from the previous year hooked me on the sport of running. It led me to join the Mira Costa Cross Country team the following fall and eventually continue my competitive running career in college at the University of Pennsylvania.

2. I don't like to be hung up on specific rituals or superstitions because these things can sometimes be out of your control on race day.

3. We have never run side-by-side during the actual race but have run hundreds of miles together in training.

4. I was excited to be back home and have the opportunity to race the MB 10k for the first time since high school. Years of training and pacing have taught me to have a good grasp on what a comfortably hard pace should feel like. I trusted my training and racing instincts to lead me to a consistent performance and strong finishing time.

Joe’s Answers

1. The most memorable moment was my first MB10k in 2008.  It was memorable because during the last mile of the race, my 12-year-old daughter Abby passed me on the strand.  This was also her first MB10k.  From that moment on, I knew she would be a running phenom.  I’ve been chasing her since.

2. To get the extra kick, I must have my double concentrated coffee 1.5 hours before the race.  No exceptions.  No substitutions.

3. Yes, if you count trying to keep up with the fastest woman at the 2018 MB10k.  When we run together, I always end up with a good workout.

4. My racing strategy involves careful pacing based on my workouts.  Once I hit the strand, it is all-out, leaving nothing in the tank.

5. I haven’t reached or seen it yet.  Life is short.  The road is long.  I have to hurry.

Noelle’s Answers

1. This past year my nephew Kolin, Kristen’s son, ran his first ever MB10k race and first 10k at 9 years old!  Powered by the sugar doughnut my nephew inhaled on mile 4, Kolin held it, the doughnut, down the entire race and finished 3rd in his age group!  We’ve successfully passed along the family tradition of running the MB10k to the next Lem generation.

2. Race day tradition is that we all meet at the finish line, snap a group photo with the MB Pier in the background, head to the hometown fair later that day for games and the beer and wine garden!

3/4. We don’t run together as sisters because we have different pacing and running styles but we meet up before and after the race.  Race day we decide if we are going to make it a fun run  (not run for time)  or if we are going to try run hard and beat our PR’s (Personal Records).  Also, we either start at the front of the race line or back so we don’t have to dodge around people and jeopardize our race times.

5. Shellback is our favorite “official” finish line! The race is not to the finish line, but to the bar!!! Gotta go to Shelly’s and grab a recovery cocktail post-race!
