The Unofficial Finish Line

Per tradition, you really haven’t finished the #mb10k until you enjoy a beverage at Shellback Tavern! We took a moment to chat with owner Bob Beverly about why this is the obvious next stop after the race.

Shellback Tavern is the “Unofficial Finish Line” for the MB10k, tell us how you got that title.

The tradition began with the very first race with Shellback Tavern opening early for the race crowd. In the early days it was a lot of can beer to go which was consumed on the street!

Chris Erskine of the Los Angeles Times wrote about Shellback Tavern in August and it was love at first sight for him. What makes people fall in love with Shellbacks?

We have a simple rule. Offer a decent product at a fair price in a friendly environment and you can't go wrong! We are known as a casual non pretentious neighborhood joint. All customers treated with respect and equally. At any time you may find the LA Kings or Galaxy. Mark Cuban has his table. TV personalities and rock stars. We are geared for good times for all.

How long have you been a sponsor of the Manhattan Beach 10k?

Russ Lesser approached us about being an official sponsor about 7 years ago but we have always helped out where needed at the finish area.

Have you run in any of the races yourself?

I personally have not raced but many in my family have participated over the years. I have never missed cheering on the runners.

MEET RON

Screen Shot 2018-09-18 at 10.23.38 AM.png

“I lived in MB from 1978 to 1983 and always enjoyed  going to the Old Hometown Fair so, in 1983, I decided to run the 10k Run, also.  However, a small conflict appeared: my upcoming wedding and the run were on the same day!  Happily, there was a few hour difference between the two events and the problem was solved.   On October 1, at 7:30, I ran the race in about 45 minutes.  Four hours later, I made it, on time, to Bel Air and got married (my wife, Becky, thought I was crazy).

This year marks our 35th Wedding Anniversary and my third running of the race.  Becky, and my younger daughter, Tiffany, will be cheering me on.  My older daughter, Suzanne, will be running the race with me!   I ran the 1984 race with my high school friend, Cameron Draine and we are still best friends—he got married a week after I did.  My 1983 finisher’s shirt has worn out but I will wear the purple 1984 finisher’s visor for this year’s race!”

MEET JODIE

IMG_6064.jpeg

“I am turning 40 this October and I love to run.  Early this year, I started the search for an October race to help me celebrate the big 4-0.  And, I found the perfect fit.  Two days before I was born, the Manhattan Beach 10k had its inaugural race.  Isn't that fabulous?  I knew I had to run in THIS race!

I convinced 9 friends to sign up and run with me.  Most of us live in Atascadero, CA but my Mom is coming from Canada and another friend from Arizona.  It will be the first time any of us have run this race.  We look forward to running with you all.”

Meet Our Local Running Clubs

Run Clubs

Here in the South Bay we are fortunate to have several running clubs and local running groups to choose from. They are a great way for people to be accountable, help train for races and enjoy overall camaraderie with fellow runners. Read on to find out about two of our faves!

Club Ed

Club Ed offers experienced coaching and a fun group-training environment for adults throughout the greater South Bay region. We believe that every runner, regardless of age, current conditioning, and previous experience can improve and achieve.  We train together several days a week at various locations, focusing on different kinds of training at each workout.

To find out more, come run with us at a Wednesday workout, Mira Costa High School track, from 6pm to 7pm. There, you can find a group of runners that are “your speed” and get going on reaching your next running goal.  With over 150 club members (although they never show up all at once!), there’s a good chance you’ll find someone to train with. Our runners cover a wide range (20-80 years old, men and women, social and competitive, 5-minute milers to 20-min/mile walkers, 5K runners to marathoners, …triathletes, too!). Come on out and see for yourself!

Why Does Club Ed Love The MB10k?

The MB10k is THE annual local race for regional residents – a chance to see old friends and neighbors, renew annual racing grudge matches, and celebrate the community in which we live. The iconic course provides a tour of much of the city, and reminds us that MB is hillier than you think (!), and that it’s a long way from El Porto to the Pier! See you at the start line!

South Bay Runners Club

The South Bay Runners Club (SBRC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit, all-volunteer organization that unites runners and walkers in Southern California. We offer year round training including distance runs, an interval training track workout, recreational and travel activities, and social gatherings.  With over 350 members, there are always runners or walkers your speed.

Our Road Runners Clubs of America (RRCA) and USA Track & Field (USATF) Certified Coaches are volunteers who advise on proper training and techniques. Whether you are trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon or simply improve your performance, we have a training plan for you. We also have a Registered Dietitian and Certified Athletic Trainer to answer any nutrition or fitness related questions you might have.

We meet on Sunday mornings at 6:00am and 7:30am in Hermosa Beach at Valley Park (27th/Gould and Valley - Artesia becomes Gould west of PCH).

We meet on Tuesday evenings 7:00pm at the Mira Costa High School Track.

We meet on Thursday evenings 6:30pm at the Skechers store in Manhattan Beach.

For more information on joining SBRC, visit www.southbayrunners.org

Twitter: @southbayrunners

Instagram: @southbayrunnersclub

Facebook: South Bay Runners Club

Why Does The SBRC Love The MB10k?

We love the MB10k because it’s OUR community race.  We run on the same streets we train on, with our friends, neighbors, and fellow runners from the South Bay.  It’s a wonderfully organized race and just the perfect start to a day capped off by the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair.

We Love A Good Story

Do you have an inspirational story about your MB10k race? Did you receive one of our scholarships? Perhaps an intriguing tale about how you got involved in running? Or even something that would blow people's minds (in a good way, of course!) We want to hear from you! To share, send 1-3 paragraphs along with a high-resolution image of yourself to info@mb10k.com. Twinning!

SP-Kirsty-Legg.jpg
SP-Stewart-Harwell.jpg

Our 2017 1st Place Duo

Today we are highlighting our First Place Finishers Kirsty Legg and Stewart Harwell! They are twinning not only because of their wins but also because they share the same birthday. Who knew?!

Our Q & A With Kirsty

You won the Manhattan Beach 10k last year and this summer came in 1st for the Village Runner 4th of July 5k and the Manhattan Mile. What do you attribute your success to?

Being competitive and not overthinking it. In college I used to think about running too much and when things weren’t quite going as I wanted in a race, I would freak out. Now I don’t have time to spend time thinking about races, now I turn up, the gun goes off and whatever happens, happens.

I actually trained for the MB10k - my goal was to get back in shape for this race after giving birth to my son, Oliver in February. But, for the 4th of July 5k and the Manhattan Mile I had done very little training. The Mile is a distance I am very familiar with, that was my event in college and post collegiately, so I knew I’d be able to finish fairly high. But the 4th of July 5k, was a total shock.

How did your first year as Head Coach of the Marymount University Cross Country and Track and Field Teams go?

I endured a steep learning curve and definitely found myself overwhelmed in the beginning, but once I’d been with the team for a couple of months I really found my groove. My Track and Field athletes racked up 60+ PR’s from February - April. Marymount is such a great place to be and a wonderful community to be a part of. My student athletes are amazing and my first season as a Mariner will be a tough one to beat.

Congratulations on getting married this summer! Do you and your husband share coaching strategies? (Husband Brian Shapiro coaches at PV High School)

I’d like to say we don’t talk running at home, but that would be a big fat lie. Running and coaching are such a huge, huge part of our lives that we are constantly talking about it; whether it’s our own personal running goals, discussing what workouts we are going to administer or talking racing strategies. There are times when we don’t agree with one another's workouts / strategies, but that’s why it works. If we constantly agreed with each others coaching that would be no fun!

How did you first get into running?

I didn’t start running until my Sophomore year of High School. I really didn’t enjoy running, but my PE teacher watched me run one day and made me try out for the Cross Country team. I was super competitive and Cross Country was the only thing I was good at. Once I actually started to train and see improvement, I was hooked.

How many MB10ks have you participated in?

Last October was my first MB10k, but I definitely see myself returning every year from now on.

What do you most love about the MB10k?

The amazing sense of community.

Our Q & A With Stewart

You won the MB10k last year and have had a string of strong finishes in many South Bay races. What do you attribute your success to?

Staying healthy is a big part of running well.  Healthy, plus running consistently.  Last year I was building up for a marathon in December so the MB10k fit perfectly into my training plan.

You are a member of the Club Ed running team. How did you become involved with this group?

I learned about Club Ed when I moved to the South Bay in 2014.  I found it online and went out to a practice and met a few of the runners.  It was great to find local runners to team up with in long runs or track workouts.  Club Ed is open to runners of all ability levels.  I’ve met some great people through the club.

How did you first get into running?

I got into running in high school thinking it would be a great way to get in shape for soccer.  I had a great coach that was pretty inspiring and motivated me to shift my focus to running.  I remember my first “long run” around the neighborhood.  My mom drove the route in her car while I was running measuring the distance.  When I got home I learned the route was 5.2 miles. That seemed like the longest run ever.

Tell us about your running career at U.C. Santa Barbara.

I ran track and cross country at UCSB from 2002-2007.  During cross country the common race distance was 8k, and in track my favorite event was the 1,500 meters.  Running in college was a great experience, figuring out how to balance a full time school workload with a competitive intercollegiate season.  I was one of the few in my engineering graduate class who also competed in sports too.  The highlight of my career would have to be scoring at conference in the 1500 m final.

2017 was your first Mb10k, did it live up to your expectations?

Yeah, this was my first year and I had a great time.  I’ve wanted to run it the last few years but the timing never worked out.

We Love A Good Story

Do you have an inspirational story about your MB10k race? Did you receive one of our scholarships? Perhaps an intriguing tale about how you got involved in running? Sponsor Spotlight | Cynthia Snyder State Farm Insurance Agency Inc.

Cynthia.jpg

Meet Cynthia Snyder

Cynthia is a longtime resident of the South Bay and has her own business in Manhattan Beach. She is one of our awesome Manhattan Beach 10k sponsors. You can stop by her booth after the race to say hello and grab some goodies!

Our Q & A With Cynthia

You have a State Farm Insurance Agency in Manhattan Beach, please tell us about your business.

I started my business in January of 2004, my husband and I were newly married.  Since that time we’ve had two children and my office team has grown to 4 employees.  I feel like I have two families to nurture!

How long have you been a sponsor of the Manhattan Beach 10k?

I guess I should look at my race t-shirts as to when I started!  I enjoy seeing the same faces every year, some new ones, and catching up with everyone.  The energy is always so positive.

How did you first get involved with the race?

I like having athletic goals on the calendar to keep me moving forward.  Supporting the local community through a 10k made it an easy decision to sign up.

Rumor has it that your kids have helped at your expo booth so you can participate in the run! Is that true?

Yes, both of my kids and their friends really enjoy ‘helping’ me out at my booth (in spite of getting out of bed earlier than they’d like).  Although, they spend most of their time chatting up the other vendors and business owners…..I want to run this year so they will have to stay put just during my race.

What can participants expect to see at your booth this year?

Hmmm, I should take a poll of what goodies people want at the end of their race!  I usually have branded items such as bags so the runners have something to carry all the goodies.  I’ve given out sunglasses, sunblock, lip balm, water.  I’m always thinking of what I would like and would stand out so people may think of my office when they need an insurance quotation or have insurance questions.  If you have any good ideas, please let me know asap so I can starting buying!

What do you most love about the race?

I truly love bumping into friends, clients, and so many people I know in the community.  It feels good to support a place that we all love….the good energy really fills my cup.  As far as the actual race, my absolute favorite part of the race is coming down the final stretch on the Strand and hearing all of the homeowners cheering for the runners.  That’s what keeps me coming back!

What made you get into running?

Since I’m a very slow runner, I’ve never really considered myself a ‘runner’.  I got into running for exercise, and ultimately enjoyed losing myself in my music and the way I felt afterwards.  It’s kind of a meditation for me.  I have a desk job so I know I just have to keep moving any way I can.  A nice balance of yoga, circuit training, walking, and running seems to keep me going and feeling good.

MB10K Spotlight: Mike Ward

Meet Mike Ward

Mike Boston.jpg

Mike Ward is a South Bay local and owns the Village Runner stores in Manhattan and Redondo Beach. We are privileged to have Village Runner as one of our race sponsors. The Village Runner, Manhattan Beach provides sponsorship by distributing bib numbers, graciously providing us a place for in-store registration, and providing food at the Expo.  It would be difficult to put on this event without them.

Our Q & A With Mike

You were a star track and cross country runner in high school and college. Give us a little background about your personal running career.

I ran cross country and track at West Torrance High school.  I also played soccer for West.  I always felt that the cross country, soccer and track combination always worked out very well for me.  In other words, “Cross country got me in great shape for soccer and soccer kept me in good shape for track.”  I was an 800 meter runner in track which I feel is a great event for soccer players (and basketball players).

After West High, I attended El Camino.  I also ran cross country and track there.  Our cross country team was very good my freshman year and I had a great time, but I must admit that my true passion was running the 1,500 meters on the track.  I really looked forward to track workouts (the more challenging the better).  I ran a 3:52 and came in 5th in the State. I got injured in the summer of 1989, so I took a break during the 1989-1990 season.  I came back to run in 1990 and 1991 but never got close to the times that I ran my freshman year.  In hindsight, it probably wasn’t wise to gain 30 lbs.!!

You have 2 Village Runner locations, tell us how you got your start in the running business.

I started working at the Village Runner in 1989.  By 1992, the owner decided that she was ready to sell the store.  Although, I was only 23 at the time, I expressed interest in buying the store and we began to have a conversation.  By August of 1992, I was able to borrow enough cash from family and friends to purchase the store.  I often tell people that I went from working at the Village Runner for $8 an hour as an employee on July 31st, 1992 to owning the Village Runner and paying myself about $3 an hour on August 1st, 1992.

Over the years you have donated over $200,000 to various South Bay causes through proceeds from your races. Why is it so important for you to give back to the community in this way?

I think that part of the reason the South Bay is such a great place to live is because of the great support that all of the local businesses do to enhance the local schools and other local non-profits in the area.  I’m grateful to have the opportunity to give back to the community that has given so much to me and my family.

This year you are generously giving money towards Mira Costa High School’s running programs with our upcoming Bib Promotion - when people purchase a $140 Village Runner gift certificate, $40 will go to Mira Costa. How do you hope that money will benefit their programs?

I think that running is a great sport/activity.  I’ve seen people throughout the years that have had life altering experiences because of running.  I think that supporting local running programs such as Mira Costa gives them a better opportunity to touch the lives of more students in a positive way.

How did you first get involved with the Manhattan Beach 10K?

I opened up my current location in Manhattan Beach in 2004.  With some help from Scott Guerrero, we started hosting the packet pick-up for the race in 2005 or 2006.  Since that time, we’ve had a great relationship with the MB10K.  I am proud to be associated with such a great community event that is enjoyed by thousands of Manhattan Beach residents every year.

Have you ever run the MB10K yourself?

I have run the MB10K a few times.

If so, what do you love most about the race?

I love the great sense of community and the positive energy that surrounds you as you run in the MB10K.  Also, although the course is somewhat of a challenge, it’s always fun to run through downtown MB and I love the last mile of running with a beautiful ocean view.

The running industry has seen it’s ups and downs over the past few years, what is your secret to success with your popular stores and races?

Support from the local community is the reason that the Village Runner stores and events have succeeded and it is greatly appreciated.  I also give a ton of credit to my staff for offering knowledgeable, friendly service throughout the years.

Cover Girl

droppage_cropped.jpg

Who’s That Girl?!

Many of you know the young lady who was featured on the homepage of our website last year, but some of you have no idea who she is. She is Gaby Guerrero, the daughter of Race Committee Member and Loyola Marymount Cross Country and Track Coach Scott Guerrero and Alison Guerrero. While people assumed Scott was responsible for engineering her to be our cover girl, he had nothing to do with it. We were hoping to appeal to a shrinking demographic in our race and races across the country and Gaby fit the bill to represent the Manhattan Beach 10K.

Our Q & A With Gaby

First off, we’d like to congratulate you as you start your college career as an LMU Lion! Tell us how you made the choice to attend Loyola Marymount.

Thank you! LMU checked all of my boxes. I wanted to be near the beach, at a Catholic school, and to run collegiately! I also fell in love with the LMU mission statement of the encouragement of learning, education of the whole person, and service of faith and promotion of justice.

How do you feel about having your dad coach you?

I am ecstatic to have my dad as my coach these next four years. He is incredibly straightforward in terms of why we train the way we do and is firmly invested in helping every single person on the team become the best runner they can be. I also think my dad’s calm temperament and sense of humor make him wonderful to be around as both a coach and a dad! He has always been so supportive of my running and education and this is just going to be an even better version of that.

You are a 3rd generation committee member for the MB10K and you’ve announced awards at the last 2 races. What is your motivation for being so involved in the race?

Two things I love more than anything are my hometown and running, so the 10K has always been something to be involved in which combines those two passions. I can remember being 6 years old and sitting on the floor of John Post’s gallery while my mom and him discussed shirt designs, so being involved is definitely in my blood! The last 4 years of my involvement have also been influenced by my running it as a workout with MCXC and volunteering on cleanup with the MBMS choirs.

You were our cover girl for the MB10K website last year. How did you feel about being the face of the race?

I think that's a better question to ask my teammates because they thought it was hilarious. Running isn't pretty but I liked that you could see how hard I was working those last 200m.

In that cover image you wore a tee that said “Run Like A Girl”. What does that mean to you?

Run like a girl is one of my favorite phrases because I think female running is so unique and special. As girls, running for us is an outlet where we can be gritty and competitive without worrying about being “nice” or “pretty” like society often pressures girls to be. Running is a unique sport that allows us as girls to bond by pushing each other on the hard days and having meaningful conversations on the easy ones. When I run like a girl it means to me that I channel the spirit of toughness I've learned exists in all of the female distance runners I've ever known, whether it be teammates, coaches, or competitors.

How many MB10K races have you run?

I think I started running the 10K when I was 8, which would mean I have run 9 races!

Have you ever been part of a family team?

Within the race? I think my dad and I have gone after the father / daughter category, but somehow we always get beat out by a member of the Chittenden family.

Will you be able to run the race this year?

Sadly I will not be able to run this year as I will be in full swing of cross country season. However I am hoping to bring out my British roommate to cheer runners on and of course hit the fair afterward!

Do you see yourself taking on bigger roles on the committee in the future?

I hope that over the next couple of years I am able to find time in my schedule at LMU to help out with the race that has given me so much. I loved announcing the awards so perhaps I'll be able to do that this year, but mainly I just want to help in any way I'm able!

What do you love most about the MB10K?

I think I’d have to say the thing I love most about the 10K is the memories it has given me, which are innumerable. When the finisher shirts would arrive at my house and my mom would have me help her sort them in our living room. When I used to run the race with my dad as a kid he would give me tips the whole time about walking up hills and how to pass people at the end. The first time I ever saw now long time boyfriend was a photo of him post 10K in a finisher shirt. And of course running the race with my MCXC teammates, absolutely exhausting ourselves in the morning and changing and heading straight to the fair in the afternoon! The 10K is my favorite event that Manhattan Beach has to offer and I hope that every year more people get to experience the joy it has brought me.

Meet John Post

Meet John Post

John became a photographer in 1974 to share with others the amazing things he had seen and experienced for himself. Whether photographing exotic India, or hovering above Manhattan Beach in a helicopter, he has captured and shared with his audience many unforgettable images.

After serving in Vietnam, he went on to receive an Associate of Arts Degree in Photography and a Bachelors Degree in Anthropology. He has stocked his ANTHRO-GRAPHICS® (man and his environments around the world) with striking images of distant lands, familiar beaches, quiet geographic studies and soaring athletes. John has been published throughout his career and his images have appeared in advertising, corporate offices and individual homes of all sizes.

Known mainly for his captivating beach scenes, John sold his first ANTHRO-GRAPHICS® in 1975 and today, thousands of prints later, he has an established reputation in the photographic field.

We recently had the chance to ask this local gem a few questions about the MB10K.

Our Q & A With John

How did you get involved with the MB10K & join the committee?

I was somewhat involved from the beginning.  In 1976 my brother Mark and I started photographing 10Ks and marathons around California under the name ACTION PHOTOS.  Since we were pretty much the only ones taking photos of the runners, we knew all the runners and they all knew us.  When Russ Lesser and some other locals formed a group to have a Manhattan Beach 10K run we naturally got involved.  My brother was initially part of the group and one of our photographers (Gordy Cusick) designed the first MB 10K shirt.  We continued photographing 10Ks and marathons thru 1981.

How long have you been a member of the committee?

I think I officially became a member of the MB10K Committee in 1982.

When did you start designing the MB10K shirts?

I have been on the MB10K Shirt Committee for almost 30 years and have designed the shirts for the past 18+ years. I also did the re-design of the logo this year.

*The image on this years shirt I photographed in 1984, one of the last times the MB10K finished on the pier.

Can you tell us about your design process for the shirts?

First, I try to get input from the 10K Committee.  With that input I then do up several layouts and show them to the Shirt Committee to review.  I then take their comments and revise and refine the design until everyone likes it.

What do you love most about the MB10K?

It’s just fun!  I have always enjoyed watching runners and the flow of the human body in motion.  The excitement and challenges of the run and the expressions on the peoples faces of both the runners and spectators and the laughter, anguish and elation is all fun stuff as folks push their limits. Also the community appeal and bonding experience of such an event is great for the city.

Have you ever had the chance to run or walk it?

In the early years I ran some of the 10K runs (when I wasn’t photographing them).  The last time I think was in 1986 when the MB10K run still finished on the pier, I have a photo that shows me breaking 40 minutes, those days are long gone.

Some may not know this, but you also arrange for the bands to play along the course. Can you tell us more about this?

For the past 30 years I have been responsible for the official music on the course of which there are a minimum of 6 music groups. Over the years I have tried to provide a good mix of music style from Rock & Roll to Tubas.  A couple years ago I got our newest group, a Klezmer band that now plays at Valley and 1st Street during the run.

Some of the groups have been playing for us now more the 25+ years and the Hyperion Outfall Serenaders have been with the run since the beginning.
