2024 MB10k winner & course record Artūrs Medveds with RRCA Official breaker

Q & A With Artūrs Medveds

Artūrs made quite an impression at the 2024 Manhattan Beach 10k! Not only did he win the race, he beat the last course record that had been in place for ten years, earning him a $1000 bonus. He ran it in 29:20. D’Ann Arthur ran it in 34:10 in 2014. This summer Artūrs also won the Manhattan Mile with a time of 4:02.81. Manhattan Beach is his lucky charm!

What went through your mind during the final stretch of the MB10k when you realized you were on pace to break the course record?
To be honest, I was aiming to run a faster time, definitely under 29 minutes. So when I saw 29:20, I was a bit disappointed. But hey, at least I won!

What’s your favorite part of the MB10k course — and what’s the toughest part?
My favorite part of the MB10KM course is definitely the last 1km—we run right by the beach, and it's beautiful. The toughest part? That hill around the 8K mark. It really tests you.

Do you approach community races like MB10k differently than larger, elite events?
I approach community races like the MB10k a bit differently. They're fun, a great way to spend time outside, meet people, make a quick buck, and they make for a solid tempo run. Plus, it's always fun to chase the police car leading the pack!

What does your training schedule look like leading up to a big race like MB10k?
Mileage, mileage, and more mileage. I'm running every day, twice a day. Running is my job, and consistency is key.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone running the MB10k for the first time?
My advice? Enjoy it. Soak in the crowd, smile, and make sure to start the first half of the race a bit faster—the second half gets hilly!

You’ve now won both the MB10k and the Manhattan Mile — what makes racing in Manhattan Beach special for you?
I'm originally from Latvia, in Europe, so coming back to Manhattan Beach is always special. I love exploring every little part of it.

Will we see you toe the line at the 2025 MB10k to defend your record?
Hard to say about this year. I'd love to return, but traveling from Europe always adds an extra layer of challenge. So we'll see!

THE MB10K IS A NON-PROFIT EVENT AND THE PROCEEDS ARE DONATED TO COMMUNITY FITNESS RELATED CAUSES & SCHOLARSHIPS. THE RACE COMMITTEE ORGANIZERS AND RACE STAFF ARE VOLUNTEERS.
