The Unofficial Finish Line

Per tradition, you really haven’t finished the #mb10k until you enjoy a beverage at Shellback Tavern! We took a moment to chat with owner Bob Beverly about why this is the obvious next stop after the race.

Shellback Tavern is the “Unofficial Finish Line” for the MB10k, tell us how you got that title.

The tradition began with the very first race with Shellback Tavern opening early for the race crowd. In the early days it was a lot of can beer to go which was consumed on the street!

Chris Erskine of the Los Angeles Times wrote about Shellback Tavern in August and it was love at first sight for him. What makes people fall in love with Shellbacks?

We have a simple rule. Offer a decent product at a fair price in a friendly environment and you can't go wrong! We are known as a casual non pretentious neighborhood joint. All customers treated with respect and equally. At any time you may find the LA Kings or Galaxy. Mark Cuban has his table. TV personalities and rock stars. We are geared for good times for all.

How long have you been a sponsor of the Manhattan Beach 10k?

Russ Lesser approached us about being an official sponsor about 7 years ago but we have always helped out where needed at the finish area.

Have you run in any of the races yourself?

I personally have not raced but many in my family have participated over the years. I have never missed cheering on the runners.

MEET RON

Screen Shot 2018-09-18 at 10.23.38 AM.png

“I lived in MB from 1978 to 1983 and always enjoyed  going to the Old Hometown Fair so, in 1983, I decided to run the 10k Run, also.  However, a small conflict appeared: my upcoming wedding and the run were on the same day!  Happily, there was a few hour difference between the two events and the problem was solved.   On October 1, at 7:30, I ran the race in about 45 minutes.  Four hours later, I made it, on time, to Bel Air and got married (my wife, Becky, thought I was crazy).

This year marks our 35th Wedding Anniversary and my third running of the race.  Becky, and my younger daughter, Tiffany, will be cheering me on.  My older daughter, Suzanne, will be running the race with me!   I ran the 1984 race with my high school friend, Cameron Draine and we are still best friends—he got married a week after I did.  My 1983 finisher’s shirt has worn out but I will wear the purple 1984 finisher’s visor for this year’s race!”

MEET JODIE

IMG_6064.jpeg

“I am turning 40 this October and I love to run.  Early this year, I started the search for an October race to help me celebrate the big 4-0.  And, I found the perfect fit.  Two days before I was born, the Manhattan Beach 10k had its inaugural race.  Isn't that fabulous?  I knew I had to run in THIS race!

I convinced 9 friends to sign up and run with me.  Most of us live in Atascadero, CA but my Mom is coming from Canada and another friend from Arizona.  It will be the first time any of us have run this race.  We look forward to running with you all.”

Meet Our Local Running Clubs

Run Clubs

Here in the South Bay we are fortunate to have several running clubs and local running groups to choose from. They are a great way for people to be accountable, help train for races and enjoy overall camaraderie with fellow runners. Read on to find out about two of our faves!

Club Ed

Club Ed offers experienced coaching and a fun group-training environment for adults throughout the greater South Bay region. We believe that every runner, regardless of age, current conditioning, and previous experience can improve and achieve.  We train together several days a week at various locations, focusing on different kinds of training at each workout.

To find out more, come run with us at a Wednesday workout, Mira Costa High School track, from 6pm to 7pm. There, you can find a group of runners that are “your speed” and get going on reaching your next running goal.  With over 150 club members (although they never show up all at once!), there’s a good chance you’ll find someone to train with. Our runners cover a wide range (20-80 years old, men and women, social and competitive, 5-minute milers to 20-min/mile walkers, 5K runners to marathoners, …triathletes, too!). Come on out and see for yourself!

Why Does Club Ed Love The MB10k?

The MB10k is THE annual local race for regional residents – a chance to see old friends and neighbors, renew annual racing grudge matches, and celebrate the community in which we live. The iconic course provides a tour of much of the city, and reminds us that MB is hillier than you think (!), and that it’s a long way from El Porto to the Pier! See you at the start line!

South Bay Runners Club

The South Bay Runners Club (SBRC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit, all-volunteer organization that unites runners and walkers in Southern California. We offer year round training including distance runs, an interval training track workout, recreational and travel activities, and social gatherings.  With over 350 members, there are always runners or walkers your speed.

Our Road Runners Clubs of America (RRCA) and USA Track & Field (USATF) Certified Coaches are volunteers who advise on proper training and techniques. Whether you are trying to qualify for the Boston Marathon or simply improve your performance, we have a training plan for you. We also have a Registered Dietitian and Certified Athletic Trainer to answer any nutrition or fitness related questions you might have.

We meet on Sunday mornings at 6:00am and 7:30am in Hermosa Beach at Valley Park (27th/Gould and Valley - Artesia becomes Gould west of PCH).

We meet on Tuesday evenings 7:00pm at the Mira Costa High School Track.

We meet on Thursday evenings 6:30pm at the Skechers store in Manhattan Beach.

For more information on joining SBRC, visit www.southbayrunners.org

Instagram: @southbayrunnersclub

Facebook: South Bay Runners Club

Why Does The SBRC Love The MB10k?

We love the MB10k because it’s OUR community race.  We run on the same streets we train on, with our friends, neighbors, and fellow runners from the South Bay.  It’s a wonderfully organized race and just the perfect start to a day capped off by the Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair.

We Love A Good Story

Do you have an inspirational story about your MB10k race? Did you receive one of our scholarships? Perhaps an intriguing tale about how you got involved in running? Or even something that would blow people's minds (in a good way, of course!) We want to hear from you! To share, send 1-3 paragraphs along with a high-resolution image of yourself to info@mb10k.com. Twinning!

SP-Kirsty-Legg.jpg
SP-Stewart-Harwell.jpg

Our 2017 1st Place Duo

Today we are highlighting our First Place Finishers Kirsty Legg and Stewart Harwell! They are twinning not only because of their wins but also because they share the same birthday. Who knew?!

Our Q & A With Kirsty

You won the Manhattan Beach 10k last year and this summer came in 1st for the Village Runner 4th of July 5k and the Manhattan Mile. What do you attribute your success to?

Being competitive and not overthinking it. In college I used to think about running too much and when things weren’t quite going as I wanted in a race, I would freak out. Now I don’t have time to spend time thinking about races, now I turn up, the gun goes off and whatever happens, happens.

I actually trained for the MB10k - my goal was to get back in shape for this race after giving birth to my son, Oliver in February. But, for the 4th of July 5k and the Manhattan Mile I had done very little training. The Mile is a distance I am very familiar with, that was my event in college and post collegiately, so I knew I’d be able to finish fairly high. But the 4th of July 5k, was a total shock.

How did your first year as Head Coach of the Marymount University Cross Country and Track and Field Teams go?

I endured a steep learning curve and definitely found myself overwhelmed in the beginning, but once I’d been with the team for a couple of months I really found my groove. My Track and Field athletes racked up 60+ PR’s from February - April. Marymount is such a great place to be and a wonderful community to be a part of. My student athletes are amazing and my first season as a Mariner will be a tough one to beat.

Congratulations on getting married this summer! Do you and your husband share coaching strategies? (Husband Brian Shapiro coaches at PV High School)

I’d like to say we don’t talk running at home, but that would be a big fat lie. Running and coaching are such a huge, huge part of our lives that we are constantly talking about it; whether it’s our own personal running goals, discussing what workouts we are going to administer or talking racing strategies. There are times when we don’t agree with one another's workouts / strategies, but that’s why it works. If we constantly agreed with each others coaching that would be no fun!

How did you first get into running?

I didn’t start running until my Sophomore year of High School. I really didn’t enjoy running, but my PE teacher watched me run one day and made me try out for the Cross Country team. I was super competitive and Cross Country was the only thing I was good at. Once I actually started to train and see improvement, I was hooked.

How many MB10ks have you participated in?

Last October was my first MB10k, but I definitely see myself returning every year from now on.

What do you most love about the MB10k?

The amazing sense of community.

Our Q & A With Stewart

You won the MB10k last year and have had a string of strong finishes in many South Bay races. What do you attribute your success to?

Staying healthy is a big part of running well.  Healthy, plus running consistently.  Last year I was building up for a marathon in December so the MB10k fit perfectly into my training plan.

You are a member of the Club Ed running team. How did you become involved with this group?

I learned about Club Ed when I moved to the South Bay in 2014.  I found it online and went out to a practice and met a few of the runners.  It was great to find local runners to team up with in long runs or track workouts.  Club Ed is open to runners of all ability levels.  I’ve met some great people through the club.

How did you first get into running?

I got into running in high school thinking it would be a great way to get in shape for soccer.  I had a great coach that was pretty inspiring and motivated me to shift my focus to running.  I remember my first “long run” around the neighborhood.  My mom drove the route in her car while I was running measuring the distance.  When I got home I learned the route was 5.2 miles. That seemed like the longest run ever.

Tell us about your running career at U.C. Santa Barbara.

I ran track and cross country at UCSB from 2002-2007.  During cross country the common race distance was 8k, and in track my favorite event was the 1,500 meters.  Running in college was a great experience, figuring out how to balance a full time school workload with a competitive intercollegiate season.  I was one of the few in my engineering graduate class who also competed in sports too.  The highlight of my career would have to be scoring at conference in the 1500 m final.

2017 was your first Mb10k, did it live up to your expectations?

Yeah, this was my first year and I had a great time.  I’ve wanted to run it the last few years but the timing never worked out.

We Love A Good Story

Sponsor Spotlight | GROW

MB10k.jpg

Meet Barry Fisher

Barry, along with his wife Kathy, own GROW in Manhattan Beach and Downtown Los Angeles. They specialize in farm-fresh produce, artisan cheeses, prepared meals, meat, fish & other gourmet groceries at their mom-&-pop markets. They have been a sponsor of the Manhattan Beach 10k since they opened their doors in 2006. Each year our racers make a beeline to the expo to grab handfuls of their refreshing grapes!

Our Q & A With Barry

Your produce shop GROW in Manhattan Beach opened in 2006, please tell us how you got your start.

It began with the need for a boogie board.  Our son sold fruit in front of our home to raise money for a boogie board.  We sourced fruit from growers whose fruit I export to Asia.  Our neighbors appreciated the quality and began leaving notes in our mail box with cherry orders for my son.  This is how we got the idea to open GROW.

Being from the Central Valley, how did you choose to settle in Manhattan Beach?

A good friend recommended Manhattan Beach when I was moving to a new company based at LAX.  The weather was picture perfect the day we arrived to look at homes.  We fell in love with Manhattan Beach and did not look at any other communities.  To this day we know we made the right choice.

You recently opened a second location in Downtown L.A., how does this location differ from your Manhattan Beach spot?

The biggest difference is each shop’s customer base.  South Bay customers are typically families while DTLA is generally single people.  We took the Manhattan Beach model to DTLA and quickly learned we needed to make some dramatic changes for GROW to meet the needs of our new customers.  The prepared department, grocery and alcohol departments are the sales base for DTLA while produce, grocery and meat/fish are in MB.

What do your markets specialize in?

GROW specializes in fresh produce, prepared meals, meat, fish, select groceries and artisan cheeses.

Why should people shop at GROW vs other markets?

That is a great question.  I think the best way to answer this is from what customers tell me:

  1. "You have the best produce and my kids eat more of it because it tastes so good."
  2. "I trust the items in your store as I feel you take the time and care to insure they are good to eat and my family will enjoy them."
  3. "I have a hard time eating a filet at any restaurant since I can prepare yours better at home."
  4. "GROW is a local business who supports our community more than any other grocery store in Manhattan Beach."
  5. "I love that I can park my car right by the door, be in and out in less than 5 minutes with a great meal. I love the convenience."
  6. "Your morning delivery is perfect. I can order by midnight and everything is on my doorstep by 7:00 am the next morning. And you pick better produce than I can!"
  7. "I am a member of these cults: GROW salsa, GROW guacamole, GROW chicken noodle soup, GROW pork chops, GROW cherries."

You sponsor many South Bay schools and charities. What inspires you to give back to the community in this way?

We live here.  This is our community and we care about our schools.  Our children were taught from Grand View to MBMS then Costa.  We feel the schools in our community are the foundation of Manhattan Beach and deserve our support.

Now that we are in the midst of summer, what’s your favorite produce for this season?

It changes every week!  Most people will see “plum” or “yellow peach” at a typical grocery store.  What many people who do not shop GROW don’t realize is there are so many varieties of pluots, peaches, nectarines, plums and grapes.  We educate our customers about the differences. On stone fruit, they change about every 10 days or so.  Understanding this, my taste jumps around each week.  Today, I like the Red Phoenix pluot.  In about 10 days, we are going to have my favorite plum of the year- the Emerald Beaut.  What is great, customers have been asking for the Emeralds for over a month - they know what good fruit is.

How long have you been a sponsor of the Manhattan Beach 10k?

We opened Sept 19, 2006.  We were at the MB 10k two weeks later cutting oranges.  I remember that day perfectly as I was cutting oranges until my left hand was numb. Runners are excited to see us at the finish line year after year!

How did you first get involved with the race?

Our friends at Village Runner recommended we participate.  So glad they reached out to us.  This is the longest partnership we have had with a community event.

What can participants expect to see at your booth this year?

The same as the past two years- Pristine and Sweet Scarlet grapes.  Last year’s runners searched us out because of the great flavor and CRUNCH.  We love seeing people take a bunch then come back, then back, then back, then in the shop asking, “Where is that grape I had at the MB10k?”

What do you most love about the race?

Seeing our friends, neighbors and GROW customers after the race.  Love to hear shout outs from runners saying nice things about the shop and our great staff.  But what we really love is that we feel we are part of the community.

Meet Cynthia Snyder

Cynthia is a longtime resident of the South Bay and has her own business in Manhattan Beach. She is one of our awesome Manhattan Beach 10k sponsors. You can stop by her booth after the race to say hello and grab some goodies!

Our Q & A With Cynthia

You have a State Farm Insurance Agency in Manhattan Beach, please tell us about your business.

I started my business in January of 2004, my husband and I were newly married.  Since that time we’ve had two children and my office team has grown to 4 employees.  I feel like I have two families to nurture!

How long have you been a sponsor of the Manhattan Beach 10k?

I guess I should look at my race t-shirts as to when I started!  I enjoy seeing the same faces every year, some new ones, and catching up with everyone.  The energy is always so positive.

How did you first get involved with the race?

I like having athletic goals on the calendar to keep me moving forward.  Supporting the local community through a 10k made it an easy decision to sign up.

Rumor has it that your kids have helped at your expo booth so you can participate in the run! Is that true?

Yes, both of my kids and their friends really enjoy ‘helping’ me out at my booth (in spite of getting out of bed earlier than they’d like).  Although, they spend most of their time chatting up the other vendors and business owners…..I want to run this year so they will have to stay put just during my race.

What can participants expect to see at your booth this year?

Hmmm, I should take a poll of what goodies people want at the end of their race!  I usually have branded items such as bags so the runners have something to carry all the goodies.  I’ve given out sunglasses, sunblock, lip balm, water.  I’m always thinking of what I would like and would stand out so people may think of my office when they need an insurance quotation or have insurance questions.  If you have any good ideas, please let me know asap so I can starting buying!

What do you most love about the race?

I truly love bumping into friends, clients, and so many people I know in the community.  It feels good to support a place that we all love….the good energy really fills my cup.  As far as the actual race, my absolute favorite part of the race is coming down the final stretch on the Strand and hearing all of the homeowners cheering for the runners.  That’s what keeps me coming back!

What made you get into running?

Since I’m a very slow runner, I’ve never really considered myself a ‘runner’.  I got into running for exercise, and ultimately enjoyed losing myself in my music and the way I felt afterwards.  It’s kind of a meditation for me.  I have a desk job so I know I just have to keep moving any way I can.  A nice balance of yoga, circuit training, walking, and running seems to keep me going and feeling good.

Do You Know Who Founded The MB10k?

The Man Who Started It All

Who can you thank for creating the Manhattan Beach 10k?! Russ Lesser, that's who. He sat down with us to answer questions about this very special race and reveals what the motivation was to bring it to life.

Our Q & A With Russ

You have been running for quite a long time. How did you first get into running?

I got into running when I was about 30 and had gained a bit of weight and was working long hours and found that running was the most time efficient way to get and then stay in shape.  I have been lucky as I have run more than 50,000 miles with very few injuries and no knee problems.

What inspired you to create this race?

In 1978 I was running quite a bit including marathons, and I was elected to the Manhattan Beach City Council.  Some friends suggested we put on a 10k run in Manhattan Beach but the city didn't have the staff to do it so I got permission from the city to put it on as individuals.  The city agreed to provide police and paramedic services at no cost which was the only way it could have happened, and they have been a great partner ever since the beginning.

We are now in our 41st year, how has the race evolved over the years?

The basic philosophy of the race has not changed from the beginning.  As runners we knew what we liked in a race so we set the following rules:  The race would start on time. There would be no political or other speeches ahead of time that no one wanted to hear.  Everyone would get a time and a place. There would be lots of awards. And, most importantly, there would be no advertising on the t-shirt, and as it was a finisher shirt, you had to run the race to get one.  We are very proud of the race, as it is put on by volunteers and all profits go back to the city and the schools in the form of building exercise equipment and scholarships. We are also proud that we have been picked as one of the top 100 races in the country, and the only one without a major sponsor.

What have you learned along the way?

I have learned that there are a lot of amazing people in Manhattan Beach who have worked for years to put on this race.  This includes the city staff, the committee members, all the volunteers, and the various groups such as the Mira Costa Choir Boosters who help out each year.  It is truly a community event. I have also learned that technology is wonderful. In the beginning we had to hand print numbers and pull tags off of runners when they finished, and put them into chutes and now it is all computerized.

You are a member of the P.I.E.R. Group, meaning you have participated in every Manhattan Beach 10k! What has kept you motivated to do this year after year?

There are about 50 of us in the P.I.E R. Group which stands for Participated In Every Race.  Why do I keep doing it? Probably because of PEER group pressure, and being one of the founders, I will keep doing it as long as I can finish under two hours and five minutes which is the time limit.  Also, every five years we have a great party at the end and so hopefully I can make it to at least 45 years and maybe 50 when I will be 86. I will admit that seems a long time away but where did the last 40 years go?

Any plans to simply enjoy being a participant of the race and step away from being a committee member?

I was the chairman for most of the first 25 years and Rachel Judson took over then and has done a fabulous job.  I am not nearly as involved now as I was for years, but will still help out as long as I am able to contribute.

Dive N’ Surf is a sponsor of the MB10k. Tell us how you got involved with them.

I met the Meistrell brothers who started Dive N' Surf and Body Glove when I was at Cal State Long Beach studying to be a CPA.  They told me that when I graduated and got out of the army they would hire me to do their accounting. I did the accounting for 25 years and then they hired me to be the president of Body Glove and Dive N' Surf.  We sold the majority interest in Body Glove a couple of years ago, but I am still involved with Dive N' Surf.

You and your wife Charlotte have led a life of philanthropy, donating your time and money to many local charities and foundations. Why is it so important for you to give back to the community in this way?

I believe strongly in the free enterprise system we have in the United States.  My wife Charlotte and I believe that people who have benefited from the opportunities our system creates have a responsibility to give back our time and resources to our community. We believe that the earlier in life you learn that it is much more satisfying to give back than it is to get the happier you will be.

A Gift For You

Russ was kind enough to offer a Dive N' Surf coupon to our MB10k participants! Hang onto your bib number after the race and head over and shop 'til you drop.
