Cover Girl

droppage_cropped.jpg

Who’s That Girl?!

Many of you know the young lady who was featured on the homepage of our website last year, but some of you have no idea who she is. She is Gaby Guerrero, the daughter of Race Committee Member and Loyola Marymount Cross Country and Track Coach Scott Guerrero and Alison Guerrero. While people assumed Scott was responsible for engineering her to be our cover girl, he had nothing to do with it. We were hoping to appeal to a shrinking demographic in our race and races across the country and Gaby fit the bill to represent the Manhattan Beach 10K.

Our Q & A With Gaby

First off, we’d like to congratulate you as you start your college career as an LMU Lion! Tell us how you made the choice to attend Loyola Marymount.

Thank you! LMU checked all of my boxes. I wanted to be near the beach, at a Catholic school, and to run collegiately! I also fell in love with the LMU mission statement of the encouragement of learning, education of the whole person, and service of faith and promotion of justice.

How do you feel about having your dad coach you?

I am ecstatic to have my dad as my coach these next four years. He is incredibly straightforward in terms of why we train the way we do and is firmly invested in helping every single person on the team become the best runner they can be. I also think my dad’s calm temperament and sense of humor make him wonderful to be around as both a coach and a dad! He has always been so supportive of my running and education and this is just going to be an even better version of that.

You are a 3rd generation committee member for the MB10K and you’ve announced awards at the last 2 races. What is your motivation for being so involved in the race?

Two things I love more than anything are my hometown and running, so the 10K has always been something to be involved in which combines those two passions. I can remember being 6 years old and sitting on the floor of John Post’s gallery while my mom and him discussed shirt designs, so being involved is definitely in my blood! The last 4 years of my involvement have also been influenced by my running it as a workout with MCXC and volunteering on cleanup with the MBMS choirs.

You were our cover girl for the MB10K website last year. How did you feel about being the face of the race?

I think that's a better question to ask my teammates because they thought it was hilarious. Running isn't pretty but I liked that you could see how hard I was working those last 200m.

In that cover image you wore a tee that said “Run Like A Girl”. What does that mean to you?

Run like a girl is one of my favorite phrases because I think female running is so unique and special. As girls, running for us is an outlet where we can be gritty and competitive without worrying about being “nice” or “pretty” like society often pressures girls to be. Running is a unique sport that allows us as girls to bond by pushing each other on the hard days and having meaningful conversations on the easy ones. When I run like a girl it means to me that I channel the spirit of toughness I've learned exists in all of the female distance runners I've ever known, whether it be teammates, coaches, or competitors.

How many MB10K races have you run?

I think I started running the 10K when I was 8, which would mean I have run 9 races!

Have you ever been part of a family team?

Within the race? I think my dad and I have gone after the father / daughter category, but somehow we always get beat out by a member of the Chittenden family.

Will you be able to run the race this year?

Sadly I will not be able to run this year as I will be in full swing of cross country season. However I am hoping to bring out my British roommate to cheer runners on and of course hit the fair afterward!

Do you see yourself taking on bigger roles on the committee in the future?

I hope that over the next couple of years I am able to find time in my schedule at LMU to help out with the race that has given me so much. I loved announcing the awards so perhaps I'll be able to do that this year, but mainly I just want to help in any way I'm able!

What do you love most about the MB10K?

I think I’d have to say the thing I love most about the 10K is the memories it has given me, which are innumerable. When the finisher shirts would arrive at my house and my mom would have me help her sort them in our living room. When I used to run the race with my dad as a kid he would give me tips the whole time about walking up hills and how to pass people at the end. The first time I ever saw now long time boyfriend was a photo of him post 10K in a finisher shirt. And of course running the race with my MCXC teammates, absolutely exhausting ourselves in the morning and changing and heading straight to the fair in the afternoon! The 10K is my favorite event that Manhattan Beach has to offer and I hope that every year more people get to experience the joy it has brought me.

All In The Family

20521.jpeg

Meet Matt

Matt is one of the sweetest guys you could ever meet! One of his most endearing qualities is the value he places on family. He has participated in the Manhattan Beach 10K for several years and often as part of a family team. We hope you enjoy his story! If you see him on October 7, he'll greet you with a huge smile and a high five.

Our Q & A With Matt

You had a baby boy in January, congrats! How is life as a new dad?

Being a father couldn’t be sweeter, more exciting and fulfilling. I’m elevated when I look into Dean’s eyes, realizing he is discovering a new world at every moment and how lucky I am to play a part in his cinematic life. His smile outshines the sun. His mother, Dani, has proven the strength of a woman transcends this world. Her spirit and endurance is mesmerizing, her compassion is contagious. Having this experience as a father and husband couldn’t be more wonderful!

What are some traditions you’d like to pass along to your son?

It’s hard to say as there are so many. I’m inclined to say that I want Dean to discover as much tradition as he can by exposing him to the world, to people and to culture. Traditionally our family leads by example, always striving to be the best at what we do, to know who you are and to be yourself at all times; enjoying each moment as if it’s your first or your last. Competition is also a tradition of ours, whether among family, sport, scholastic or in your career. The Manhattan 10K, as an example, began as competition, then fun, then a connection amongst our family and ultimately became a tradition as each year the run represented something new and refreshing. Like 2016 representing the future birth of our son, and 2017 will be the celebration of his life.

We know you are all about family, why is your family so special to you?

Family is the core of your soul. Your foundation is built on your family and securing that foundation with love is the pillar of your character. Life’s first experiences derive from family and challenges in life are often overcome by the support you receive from family. I believe very much in tangible love, something that you can experience, touch, feel, embrace, learn from and connect with. Family is all of those and more.

You have run with your dad in several MB10Ks as well as your siblings. Tell us about your experiences running as a family team.

My brother Eric is credited for bringing the Manhattan Beach 10K to our family. He grew up in PV along with my sister Jenny, then Hermosa and some time in Manhattan Beach. In 2003 Eric asked my girlfriend Dani and I, my future wifey, if we wanted to run. He lived off 8th street at the time and we all stayed at his house and then ran the next day. It was so much fun. Wonderfully organized race, perfect weather, friends, family and beer gardens afterward <grin, smile>. We had a blast. The next year more family joined and soon we were celebrating each year at my brother’s house and then running the race. It became a family tradition that we would run the race, then celebrate my brother's birthday at his house afterward with LOTS of food, smiles and making fun of those who had a tough time <LOL>. As we’ve gotten older running as a team became more important as it brought us together, training for a cause and uniting each other in a goal. I want to medal every year with my dad, share the stories with my son, and give him the medals that his Grandfather and I won together.

You have medaled many times, how do you proudly display your MB10K medals?

I have to laugh as I truly cherish the MB10K medals much more than those I’ve gathered at other races. Running has been a big part of my family’s life – my wifey medaling a few times as well. I do actually keep these medals on a pedestal at home – more for my family when they visit to evoke nostalgia and begin the fun discussion of remembering the times. These are keepsakes. The MB10K is a fun race, just enough challenge, but possibly not something a professional runner would mantel. But for us they mean so much more. In a way they are a time capsule.

You live in Orange County but continue to come up here for the race. Why do you keep running the MB10K?

Shoot – it’s Manhattan Beach - <LOL> - we run every year to bring our family together and enjoy the unbelievable tradition that Manhattan Beach created to give back to the community. Everyone that runs this race is having so much fun. Not only that, as you run everyone is outside their homes enjoying the spectacle, cheering and motivating. The music each mile lets you know you’re almost there and then the last stretch heading toward the beach and seeing the view of the ocean reminds you that life is pretty darn good. Finishing the race with family, taking pictures afterward, eating great food all while enjoying the scenery of the pier and ocean is quite addicting. I could give you a million reasons why we run this race. The #1 reason is to be with family, honestly.

Can You Dig This?!

DigMB.com-Logo.jpg

For The Love Of Manhattan Beach

Today we are highlighting two super resources for the city of Manhattan Beach -  DigMb and the Downtown Manhattan Beach Business & Professionals Association. DigMB is 100% local and 100% about Manhattan Beach and it should be your go to if you want to know about all the happenings here covering topics from the beach, to restaurants, to local school news. The Downtown Businesses of Manhattan Beach are your source for discovering why this beloved beach city is called "Heaven in flip flops".

Our Q & A With DigMB

DigMB is an awesome resource for the community of Manhattan Beach! What are the top 3 things you're currently digging about MB?

There is SO MUCH to do here in the summertime – it’s hard for me to keep up! With concerts, plays, and movies; world-class athletic events; and amazing activities and events at the beach, you could keep yourself and your family entertained all summer and never spend a dime. The Manhattan Beach Department of Parks and Rec deserves a big shout-out for all they do to create fun and interesting events all year long.

How do you get your community information? Can the general public submit to a calendar or a story idea?

Mostly people email me (jf@digmb.com) but I also keep my ear to the ground and watch Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter closely to see what’s going on around town.

Generally if people have a community event, they just enter it into our website themselves- the DigMB platform is very user-friendly and you are free to just go in and put it in the calendar – but people are welcome to email me as well.

Some of our MB10K participants will be coming from out of state and even out of the country, what do you recommend as the top 3 things they must see while they are visiting our beach town?

Fun question! It’s hard to pick just three.

Once the runners finish the MB10K they’ll be down at the Manhattan Beach Pier, which is definitely at the top of the must-see list… But instead of just looking at it, I’d also recommend that they walk out on the pier and take a few minutes to watch the surfers and sea creatures, and then look back toward land to take in the cityscape of Manhattan Beach.

For a second destination, I’d recommend that they start at the Manhattan Beach Library and walk across the Civic Plaza taking in all of the artwork…ending up at Metlox Plaza where they can stop for a coffee or a quick bite.

If they’re interested in checking out shops and restaurants, it’s fun to stroll through Downtown Manhattan Beach or El Porto to get a flavor of this lively beach town.

For someone who’s more interested in nature, I’d recommend heading over to Polliwog Park and strolling the grounds, checking out the Manhattan Beach Botanical Garden, and even popping in to the Manhattan Beach Historical Society’s Beach Cottage Museum (open on Saturday and Sunday afternoons).

Manhattan Beach has been creating quite a buzz in the food world, what are some of the most creative things you’ve seen coming out of the kitchens lately?

I love what Chef D has been doing at Manhattan House with the Junior Chefs program (partnering with Growing Great and local elementary schools to get kids’ garden creations on the menu). The program should be back in swing when the MB10K rolls around and school is back in session.

As a food writer (I also have a food blog called Jolly Tomato at www.jollytomato.com) I’m also thrilled that there are so many restaurants in town that are doing amazing things with fresh, seasonal produce. You’ll find seasonally changing menus at some of our town’s most acclaimed restaurants, including MB Post, Love & Salt, The Strand House…the list goes on.

There are many inspiring people in our community that are helping those in need and raising awareness for certain causes. Can you highlight a few of these charitable gems?

There are so many people involved in such great causes it’s hard to pick just a few. The P.S. I Love You Foundation just had an amazingly successful day on the beach with their Adopt A Child for One Day program to help underprivileged kids. Walk With Sally had another fantastic White Light/White Night event last month to support their programs for children whose family members have suffered from cancer. The Manhattan Beach Education Foundation is doing great things throughout the school year for our schools. And Grades of Green – which started here in Manhattan Beach –is now a national movement that’s changing the way our kids think about our environment. Then there’s the Neptunian Woman’s Club, Sandpipers, Manhattan Beach Rotary, Kiwanis… all of whom are extremely active in town. We’re lucky to live in a place where so many people place such high value on thinking beyond themselves.

Downtown Manhattan Beach

We love the Downtown Manhattan Beach Business & Professionals Association! They have several fun-filled community events during the year and we'd like to highlight their next one - the Sunset Beach Party on the AVP Skydeck. It takes place this Thursday, August 17 from 5-8 pm. You can purchase tickets by clicking here.

MB10K Spotlight: Jack Tsu & Major Avignon

MB10K Spotlight

As we look back at our celebrated history, there are two people we'd like to highlight in this newsletter - Jack Tsu and Major Avignon.

Meet Jack Tsu

His son Elbert, pictured above with his dad, shared the following with us about Jack:

Jack Tsu was born August 2nd, 1921 in Shanghai, China. His parents sent him to the University of Michigan in 1941. He got his doctorate at Caltech where he met his wife Doris (they were married for 74 years). He got a job at Northrop where he worked on the Flying Wing and Titan 2 Rocket. His family moved to Manhattan Beach in 1966.

He developed an ulcer and his doctor suggested he start running to relieve his stress, so he read Kenneth Cooper’s book “Aerobics.” This started his daily jogging that he never stopped even on exotic trips to foreign countries and adventures like Everest basecamp at 18,000 feet, running a 10K in China, and carrying the Olympic torch before the 2008 Olympics.

For 30 years in a row he ran the MB 10K and won 15 gold medals in a row in his age division. He ran his last MB 10K when he was 93. In 2016 he had two brain bleeds which stopped him from jogging but he can still be seen everyday walking around the block.

Our Q & A With Jack

Did your family or friends ever run the MB10K with you?

Elbert and his wife Liane jogged with me during my last 2 races and my niece and nephew jogged with me once.

Have you held onto all of your MB10K Finisher tees?

I have a few current ones but I've given many of them away to family and friends.

How do you think running has impacted your life?

Running has had an immense impact.  I started jogging after getting an ulcer and didn’t stop jogging till recently. I still walk around the block even after 2 strokes last year.

What is the secret to your longevity?

Jogging and walking at least 5 days a week and drinking Dragon Well Tea. I never liked to run but I did it because it was good for me.

At the wise age of 96, any words of wisdom for us? (FYI we have Jack to thank for having the 90+ Age Division for our awards & for years we made special arrangements for him to run in the bib number that reflected his age!)

The secret to living a long life is to jog 5 days a week.

Meet Major Avignon

Major lives up to his name and does a MAJOR amount of work for the MB10K! He and his wife Linda, pictured above with him, are Race Committee members. He is a P.I.E.R. member, meaning he has participated in every race and his company Water, Inc. is a race sponsor providing water for our participants.

Our Q & A With Major

When and why did you start your company? We hear you were selling water before it was popular!

I started Water, Inc. in 1977 after spending 13 years in the insurance business. When I started Water, Inc. marketing residential water filtration was a new concept but I saw a huge opportunity. Sparklett's and Arrowhead were doing well selling bottled water and our filtered water was just as good as their bottled product.

Tell us about your company Water, Inc.

We distribute nationally water improvement products and high end appliances through plumbing and appliance showrooms. Our companies employ 24 people at our Carson office, showroom and warehouse.

Where are your products available?

Consumers looking at doing a home remodel or are building a new home have an opportunity to see and purchase our 8 registered brands at over 1,000 showrooms nationally.

What sets you apart from other water businesses?

What sets Water, Inc. apart from other suppliers of product is our dedication to service. Our products carry a 1 year in home parts and labor warranty. Our brands are not commodities and we go the "extra mile" to prove that with excellent customer service.

You wear several hats with the Manhattan Beach 10K, how did you get involved with the race?

I have run every Manhattan Beach 10K since 1978. Initially doing race registrations at the Joslyn Center and soon thereafter joining the 10K Committee.

When did you start having a booth at the race expo?

Passing our Body Glove bottled water after the race has been our pleasure since the beginning of the race expo.

What do you love most about the MB10K?

Loving the MB10K is very easy as a participant and being a part of this great community event each year. Manhattan Beach is a special town and our Manhattan Beach 10K Run totally reflects that spirit.

Water, Inc.

If you wish to reach them directly please call 1-800-322-WATER (9283).

Have You Met The Wall-nuts?!

Meet The Wall-nuts!

The Wall-nuts are a group of gentlemen who happen to be quite the characters. When they were approached for this interview they shared their insight of running over the last 40 years in Manhattan Beach.

Here’s what Wall-nut Mo had to say about some of their traditions, or lack thereof

The Wall-Nuts are nothing but not traditional. Like, how we occasionally run to Rosecrans on our training runs. Oh, wait—we don’t do that anymore. How about how we occasionally take a dip in the ocean? Oh, right, we stopped that one years ago. Well, we always go for brunch after the 10K race together. Hmm, lately, not so much. And we’re an all-male running group. We’d never let a woman run with us! Oh, well, maybe we do sometimes, if she’s a family member, or a trainer, or a friend, or just…Jeez, maybe we don’t have as many traditions as I thought…”

The following Q & A features answers from one of the founding Wall-nut members, Michael Allmon.

When were the Wall-nuts founded?

We are created to train for the first MB10K - so I think that was 1978.

Who started the group and why?

I lived at the corner of Valley & Walnut…I saw a neighbor (Mitch Gillis) running on the old railroad tracks (today’s running path) -  we decided that we should train together, but our schedules didn’t work well together during the week, so we decided to meet each Sunday at 9 in front of my house.  I eventually moved away a few years later, but he stayed.  We now meet at his house and gather there - then we meet after the run in his backyard for water, Gatorade and (more) conversation…

How did you come up with the group name?

Long story -  I will try for a short version - a couple of years after running together, and as more and more guys joined us, we wanted uniforms and a name.  We argued for months until MB changed the street signs.  We were walking by the new sign that said “Walnut” and noticed that there was a running shoe on that sign (actually it is an ocean wave, but to a Wall-nut it was a shoe!) - and so the answer was received divinely!  From that point, it became a discussion that we were all nuts for running so much and the name needed to reflect that…  we didn’t want to be the “Walnuts”, as this was too common for our strange group - and somehow, we came up with Wall-nuts.

How many members do you have?

The 2018 (yes 2018) listing is probably a bit outdated (believe it or not!) but it shows 62 members - this includes guys we haven’t seen in years and can’t find (“missing in action”).  Each Sunday we have an average of 15 or so -  this is made up of 3 groups (a 10k group that runs that far, a shorter group, and a walking group).  Our quarterly dinners (we are an old-fashioned drinking group with a running problem) are about 3 times a year and we generally have over 20 in attendance.

Speaking of members, why only men?

“If you have to ask, you wouldn’t understand” is the usual answer!  Because we don’t have to be polite, have manners or any of the things we have to do in “proper/polite company”!

Rumor has it you invited a female to run with you, can you confirm this?

This would be very rare unless she was a member of the MB10K race committee, and fully warned in advance!

How often do you meet?

The group still meets at 9 but now it’s “near” the corner of Valley & Walnut rather than at the corner.  We now group in front of Mitch’s house and the official timekeeper “the monkey” tells us when we have reached a 5-minute grace period.  We then walk to the path and along to Pacific where we are started by our official starter.  The walking is because a 5-minute grace period isn’t sufficient for Wall-nuts.  As one of our wives once said, “The Wall-nuts are not a very evolved group”, and this includes being able to get places on time.  We usually leave Mitch’s house with about 10 of us and another 5 or so jump in while we are walking.

Do you wear anything special when you run so people can recognize you?

The Wall-nuts gear includes at least a half dozen styles of shirts (two different logos, short and long sleeves and different styles), shorts, and a hat.  The shirt is required, and the rest is optional. We have a complete set of rules (kept in my head), including a fine system more complex that the Internal Revenue Code of the IRS.

Not that you're going to be 'over the hill' at 40 years, but are there any plans for anyone to retire their P.I.E.R. Group streak?

You must be kidding!  We will carry anyone who can’t walk!

40 consecutive years is a long time. Was there ever a year you almost didn't run the race?

Yes, especially early on… but then the streak started, so it is now on our calendars far in advance. This is now the highest priority on my calendar.  Nothing will replace it.

How many in your group have run every MB10K?

There are 5 of us:

  • Me - Michael Allmon (da King's disciple)
  • Mitch Gillis (da King)
  • Don Jung
  • Tracey Johnson
  • Dale Keldrauk

What do you love most about the MB10K?

It is a wonderful neighborhood tradition that has helped to create the camaraderie of our group. We all look forward to the run each year.  In addition to the awards given by the race committee, we also have our own awards.  In spite of having members who have won the entire race, I happened to have won “fastest Wall-nut” last year.  Of course, this is because of those rules I mentioned earlier (the ones in my head).  I won because we have an attendance requirement.  In addition to being fined for not showing up, a Wall-nut would be disqualified from our medal if he misses attending at least once a month.  Last year was a perfect year for me because all of our fast runners missed at least one month!

Meet John Post

Meet John Post

John became a photographer in 1974 to share with others the amazing things he had seen and experienced for himself. Whether photographing exotic India, or hovering above Manhattan Beach in a helicopter, he has captured and shared with his audience many unforgettable images.

After serving in Vietnam, he went on to receive an Associate of Arts Degree in Photography and a Bachelors Degree in Anthropology. He has stocked his ANTHRO-GRAPHICS® (man and his environments around the world) with striking images of distant lands, familiar beaches, quiet geographic studies and soaring athletes. John has been published throughout his career and his images have appeared in advertising, corporate offices and individual homes of all sizes.

Known mainly for his captivating beach scenes, John sold his first ANTHRO-GRAPHICS® in 1975 and today, thousands of prints later, he has an established reputation in the photographic field.

We recently had the chance to ask this local gem a few questions about the MB10K.

Our Q & A With John

How did you get involved with the MB10K & join the committee?

I was somewhat involved from the beginning.  In 1976 my brother Mark and I started photographing 10Ks and marathons around California under the name ACTION PHOTOS.  Since we were pretty much the only ones taking photos of the runners, we knew all the runners and they all knew us.  When Russ Lesser and some other locals formed a group to have a Manhattan Beach 10K run we naturally got involved.  My brother was initially part of the group and one of our photographers (Gordy Cusick) designed the first MB 10K shirt.  We continued photographing 10Ks and marathons thru 1981.

How long have you been a member of the committee?

I think I officially became a member of the MB10K Committee in 1982.

When did you start designing the MB10K shirts?

I have been on the MB10K Shirt Committee for almost 30 years and have designed the shirts for the past 18+ years. I also did the re-design of the logo this year.

*The image on this years shirt I photographed in 1984, one of the last times the MB10K finished on the pier.

Can you tell us about your design process for the shirts?

First, I try to get input from the 10K Committee.  With that input I then do up several layouts and show them to the Shirt Committee to review.  I then take their comments and revise and refine the design until everyone likes it.

What do you love most about the MB10K?

It’s just fun!  I have always enjoyed watching runners and the flow of the human body in motion.  The excitement and challenges of the run and the expressions on the peoples faces of both the runners and spectators and the laughter, anguish and elation is all fun stuff as folks push their limits. Also the community appeal and bonding experience of such an event is great for the city.

Have you ever had the chance to run or walk it?

In the early years I ran some of the 10K runs (when I wasn’t photographing them).  The last time I think was in 1986 when the MB10K run still finished on the pier, I have a photo that shows me breaking 40 minutes, those days are long gone.

Some may not know this, but you also arrange for the bands to play along the course. Can you tell us more about this?

For the past 30 years I have been responsible for the official music on the course of which there are a minimum of 6 music groups. Over the years I have tried to provide a good mix of music style from Rock & Roll to Tubas.  A couple years ago I got our newest group, a Klezmer band that now plays at Valley and 1st Street during the run.

Some of the groups have been playing for us now more the 25+ years and the Hyperion Outfall Serenaders have been with the run since the beginning.
